Instead of killing him you let him escape from the guards. He runs into the forest, but not before thanking you.
The guards are curious as to why you let him escape. You tell them that everyone deserves a second chance. The guards ride away.
You get back on your horse and explore. The man left alive will always remember what you did for him. You ride away looking around for any more criminal activity in the area.
